In addition, they will learn about the basic properties of the graphic system, the representation of time and space, how to prepare data for visualization, as well as perform an augmented reality exercise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WEEK ONE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1: 03.02.2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is the <a href=\"http:\/\/sysrep.aalto.fi\/lilydiaz\/?attachment_id=462\" title=\"Schedule for week one\">schedule for week one<\/a>. The instructions for creating the narratives for the Personal Timeline exercise are in the same attachment as the schedule.<\/p>\n<p>During the class today I presented a Brief History of Visualization. (Note that the slides are bit big and so I have placed them in a Dropbox folder where you can access them.) By Laurens van Lieshout, April 2007, Wikimedia Commons.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/EVhx96Oml3U\" title=\"Video about six degrees of separation\">Small-World Networks: &#8220;Six-degrees of separation&#8221;<\/a> &#8211; John D Barrow Gresham College maths lecture video (9:04 mins.) explains the experiment by Stanley Milgram.<\/p>\n<p>Using the Internet Movie Database, this Android application, <a href=\"https:\/\/oracleofbacon.org\/help.php\" title=\"Oracle of Bacon\">Oracle of Bacon<\/a>, will return a simple visualization of the degrees of separation between actor Kevin Bacon and other actors in the movie industry. <\/p>\n<p>Here are some interesting sites that you should visit:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Milestones in the History of Thematic Cartography, Statistical Graphics, and Data Visualization<\/strong> by Michael Friendly and Daniel J. Denis. See the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.datavis.ca\/milestones\/index.php?page=introduction\">website<\/a> here.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/infosthetics.com\"><strong>InfoAesthetics website<\/strong><\/a>: Inspired by Lev Manovich&#8217;s definition of &#8216;information aesthetics&#8217;, this weblog explores the symbiotic relationship between creative design and the field of information visualization.<\/p>\n<p>Below I list two fine papers by prof. The idea behind this exercise is to reflect about notions such as Embodiment, Research, Visualization &amp; Design.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 3: 05.02.2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are examples of the Retinal Variables. Also an interesting example of working with line and tension by artist A. Balasubramanian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moma.org\/interactives\/exhibitions\/2010\/online\/#videos\/01\">video<\/a> from the 2010 exhibition ONLINE &#8211; Drawing through the Twentieth Century at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Also today we present and discuss initial concepts for the personal timelines being created.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WEEK TWO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Day 1: 10.02.2015<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today we are going to present and discuss the results from the Personal Timelines exercise.
